Do you ever experience a surge of anxiety at the thought of speaking in front of others, whether on stage, in the boardroom or even in a small meeting.

Public speaking can affect even the most capable, intelligent and highly competent of individuals. I regularly work with professionals, who are confident in their expertise, yet experience overwhelming nerves, self doubt or panic whilst presenting.

In this article, we will explore public speaking anxiety, why it persists and how hypnotherapy can help you manage and overcome it in a positive and sustainable way. I will also share insights from my clinical work to illustrate that building confidence is not about ‘forcing perfection’, but about transforming the underlying voice that drives anxiety.

As a hypnotherapist and certified coach, I have supported clients from corporate, media and high performance environments in transforming their relationship with speaking, often achieving results sooner than they anticipated.

What is public speaking anxiety?

Public speaking anxiety, commonly associated with social or performance anxiety, is more than just feeling nervous.

At its core, it is a threat response.

When you anticipate speaking, your mind may interpret the situation as socially, professionally or emotionally risky. This perception is often driven by a fear of making mistakes, which is rooted in a deeper fear of social rejection.

In response, your body may activate a fight or flight response. This can manifest in a variety of ways, such as an increased heart rate, shallow breathing, a dry mouth, racing thoughts or moments where your mind suddenly goes blank.

For some individuals, this response is mild and manageable. For others, it may feel intense and overwhelming.

It is important to understand that this response is not  a sign of weakness. It is learned, and learned responses can be updated.

Why public speaking anxiety persists

As a hypnotherapist and certified coach, specialising in public speaking anxiety, I get asked a lot of extremely common questions:

‘Why does performance anxiety persist despite conscious efforts to manage it?’

In my experience there are several underlying drivers.

Fear of rejection

Many clients carry internal beliefs such as ‘If I make a mistake, I will lose credibility’ or ‘people will see that I am not good enough.’ These beliefs can create significant internal pressure and resistance, which may reinforce feelings of anxiety when speaking in front of others.

A past experience

Sometimes anxiety stems from earlier experiences. This may include a moment at school that felt embarrassing, criticism from a senior colleague or a time when speaking publicly did not go as planned. Even if these occurred years ago, the mind may have subconsciously labelled public speaking as something daunting, and therefore something to be avoided.

Perfectionism and High Standards

For many high achieving professionals, public speaking anxiety may be amplified by perfectionism and the pressure to meet extremely high standards. Beliefs such as ‘I must deliver flawlessly’ or ‘Any mistake may ruin my credibility’ can create a cycle of self- criticism and fear.

Why confidence techniques often fail

There is no shortage of advice online about overcoming public speaking anxiety:

  • ‘Just practice more.’
  • ‘Visualise success.’
  • ‘Pretend the audience is naked.’

While rehearsal and preparation can be helpful, they often don’t address the root cause. If the subconscious mind still associates public speaking with danger or humiliation, these conscious – level techniques may only provide temporary relief.

This is where hypnotherapy can offer a more sustainable and effective approach, helping to transform the underlying patterns that drive public speaking anxiety.

How hypnotherapy helps overcome public speaking anxiety

Hypnotherapy works by identifying and addressing the subconscious drivers that fuel public speaking anxiety.

Rather than simply teaching coping strategies on a conscious level, we explore the meaning your mind has attached to speaking in front of others, where the meaning originated and whether it is still helpful today.

Here are the key ways hypnotherapy supports sustainable change.

Updating the emotional memory

In many cases, public speaking anxiety is associated with an earlier experience.

A client may intellectually understand that one embarrassing moment at school does not define them, yet emotionally, the mind and body still react.

Using carefully guided therapeutic techniques, we can reprocess the memory, reduce its emotional charge and update the meaning attached to it.

As the emotional intensity decreases, the fear response often diminishes significantly.

Reframing catastrophic thinking

A habit I frequently observe is catastrophic thinking.

  • ‘If I stumble over a word, my career will suffer.’
  • ‘If I feel nervous, everyone will notice.’
  • ‘If I don’t appear confident, people will think I am incompetent.’

In hypnotherapy, we challenge these assumptions directly.

We explore:

  • Alternative interpretations
  • More balanced and rational perspectives

Regulating the physiological response

Anxiety is not only mental, it is also physical. Through relaxation and focused attention techniques, clients learn to slow their breathing naturally, release muscle tension, reduce adrenaline and the ability to access a calmer internal state. With repetition, the body learns that public speaking does not require an overwhelming stress response, making speaking progressively more manageable and natural.

When to seek professional support for public speaking anxiety

It may be beneficial to consider professional support if you find yourself avoiding opportunities due to public speaking anxiety, experiencing intense physical symptoms or feeling that fear is limiting your career progression.

Addressing this block can have far reaching professional and personal benefits.

The broader Impact of overcoming public speaking anxiety

When clients overcome public speaking anxiety, the benefits are rarely confined to presentations. There are noticeable improvements in meetings, client conversations,  interviews, assertiveness and overall communication.

This is because the underlying change positively adapts self- perception, not just performance.

Public speaking anxiety is not a character flaw, it is a learned protective response that can be understood and addressed.

By becoming aware of the emotional roots, reframing unhelpful thinking and regulating the physiological stress response, hypnotherapy offers a structured and sustainable path towards confidence.

With the right support, it is entirely possible to move from fear driven performance to calm, self assured presence.

If you feel that public speaking anxiety is limiting your professional potential, you don’t have to manage it alone.
