As children, most of us are taught that anger is bad and something to be avoided. How many of us, I wonder, were sent to our rooms as children to reflect on what we’d said or done in anger?
Actually, anger is just the way we let go of a ‘negative charge’ – a way of showing passionate disagreement. In spite of the bad rap it gets, anger expressed in the right way is a healthy device for accomplishing change, getting things done or simply moving forward.
The villain here, though, is repressed or suppressed anger – anger that has been held back and never given its voice and as a result begins to have a detrimental impact on your life and the lives of others. It can cause lethargy, hopelessness, lack of energy, eating orders and depression. Sometimes, this anger can leak out unexpectedly and surprise us with its ferocity – and in this uncontrolled state, anger becomes rage.
There are all sorts of legitimate reasons why you may feel angry, but anger that has been locked away and never released becomes destructive – and eventually there comes a point when you need to ask yourself if this anger is serving you in any way.
