Often profound events that shatter our sense of security and make us feel helpless, alone, fearful and vulnerable can cause long-lasting emotional and psychological trauma.
Trauma can be caused by a one-off event, sustained relentless stress, childhood abuse (emotional, sexual and physical) and other acts or periods of abuse, such as rape. And the nature of trauma is such that the more helpless the event makes you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatised by it.
Even if the source of the trauma is removed, time is not necessarily the great healer we’re led to believe it is. In fact, someone who has been traumatised can find themselves frozen in time long after the cause has ended, stuck in the pain of the past and unable to move on.
Everyone has their own unique emotional response which means trauma can manifest itself in different ways – for example through intense fear, drug and alcohol dependency, eating disorders, depression, social and emotional withdrawal, flashbacks, anxiety and feelings of continued helplessness.
But these feelings and behaviours aren’t fixed or permanent. It’s possible to change them and hypnosis for trauma can be very effective at achieving success.
